PD-1, or programmed cell death protein 1, is a cell surface receptor protein that plays a crucial role in regulating the immune response in the human body. It is a type I transmembrane protein that belongs to the CD28/CTLA-4 family of immune checkpoint receptors. PD-1 is primarily expressed on the surface of activated T cells, B cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and certain other immune cell types. It is induced upon activation of these cells and serves as a mechanism to control the immune response and prevent excessive immune activation. Many tumors exploit the PD-1 pathway to evade immune detection and destruction. Tumor cells can upregulate PD-L1 to engage PD-1 on immune cells, leading to immune suppression and allowing the tumor to evade attack by the immune system.
