The structural capsid protein p24, which has a molecular weight of 24 kDa, is the most abundant viral (HIV) protein and forms part of the Gag polypeptide. It is detectable at relatively high levels in the blood during the early stages of HIV infection, making it a potential viral marker for diagnosis, blood donor screening, monitoring disease progression, and evaluation of antiretroviral therapy efficacy. Initial HIV tests only measure antibody levels, which are only detectable approximately 3–4 weeks post-infection. The p24 protein can be detected in patient blood as early as two weeks post infection, making p24 antigen particularly valuable for the diagnosis of primary HIV infection.

Figure 1: Antigen-Antibody binding assay (ELISA). The 96-well plate (Greiner Bio) was coated with 100 ng of HIV-1 recombinant p24 antigen (Abcam, Ab43037) overnight at 4°C. The coated antigen was detected with primary antibody, PtX™ Human HIV-1 p24 (HRP) at a 1: 2 000 dilution. Increasing amounts of PtX™ Human HIV-1 p24 (HRP) were plotted against the corresponding absorbance units.

PtX™ | Plant-Based Expression

The biotechnology behind the development and manufacture of this product, transient plant-based expression, effectively turns Nicotiana benthamiana plants into single use, biodegradable bioreactors. Infiltrating this plant species with Agrobacterium tumefaciens cells, transformed with our proprietary plant expression vectors, allows rapid production of a wide variety of recombinant proteins. Plants are harvested and proteins extracted by various stages of filtration, clarification, purification, and polishing – resulting in a highly functional final product.
