Interleukin-8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is a member of the chemokine family. Cytokines are small signalling molecules that are secreted by immune cells and other cell types in response to infection, injury, or other stimuli. IL-8 is produced by a variety of cell types, including immune cells, endothelial cells, and epithelial cells, and plays an important role in the immune response to infection and inflammation. IL-8 binds to specific receptors on the surface of neutrophils, called CXCR1 and CXCR2, which activate signaling pathways within the cells that lead to their migration towards the site of infection or inflammation. In addition, IL-8 also activate other immune cells such as T cells and natural killer cells and promote angiogenesis in tissues undergoing repair or remodelling. Excessive or chronic production of IL-8 can contribute to the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer.
