Molecular farming, the use of plant systems to produce recombinant proteins, is now over 30 years old. One of the first-ever publications on plant systems is a 1983 study on the successful transformation of the marker gene for β-glucuronidase (GUS) in higher plants (Fraley, R.T et al., 1983). Today, several plant-made biological products such as monoclonal antibodies, enzymes, virus-like particles (VLPs), growth factors, therapeutics, and vaccines are produced in plants around the world.
