Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE-2) is a carboxydipeptidase that plays a primary role in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). It is abundantly expressed on the apical surface of differentiated and primarily ciliated airway epithelium of the lungs (alveolar Type-2 cells), and enterocytes of the small intestine. It is also expressed in arterial and venous endothelial cells and arterial smooth muscle cells, as well as heart, kidneys, adrenal glands, pancreas, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue.  Research demonstrates a protective function of ACE-2 in peripheral tissues, and ACE-2 dysregulation has been implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease and RAS-related diseases. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 is also the host receptor that binds the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, making it a primary focus area for COVID-19 research. Our recombinant, plant-made ACE-2 protein is composed of amino acids 18-731 (Uniprot: Q9BYF1) and genetically fused to the human IgG1 Fc (Uniprot: P01857).
